Reproduction of Power Structures in Finland 1660–2005

Re-power is headed by Professor of Economics Hannu Vartiainen from the Turku School of Economics. The researchers in this multidisciplinary project are Dr.Sci. (Economics) Olli-Pekka Ruuskanen and M.A. (History) Alex Snellman.

Our aim is to study the changing Finnish society in the long term. The research project is based on extensive databases that mainly consist of persons from the upper layers of the society. Accordingly, we are focusing on the transforming elite structures and on the social mobility – or immobility  of these families during many generations.

Olli-Pekka Ruuskanen's Area of Research

The main focus of this part of the study will be to explain present day power structures and their historical origins quantitatively from the perspective of individuals and families. The data used comes from the 1909–2005 editions of ”Who’s Who in Finland”. A matching algorithm will be programmed to trace out family linkages in the data. Men and women are linked with their offspring in different generations, provided they are also included in the register. The formation and persistence of these family linkages will be explained by a host of individual and society level characteristics. The analysis will be carried out using the latest econometric methods.

Alex Snellman's Area of Research

The aim of this part of the study is to find out how a traditional elite, the nobility of Finland, has been able to withstand the challenge of Modernisation through two centuries. The study will be both qualitative and quantitative. The quantitative analysis is based on genealogical publications of the Finnish nobility.
