Alex Snellman is preparing the first dissertation in Finland that gives a general historical picture of the nobility in the last two centuries. Mr Snellman is a doctoral student at the Finnish Doctoral School of History. His dissertation provides fundamental knowledge about nobility and its role in the reproduction of power structures in Finland. By comparing the Finnish case with other European societies and their nobilities the dissertation provides a new insight into the workings of the European societies and their power elites.

The aim of this part of the project is to find out how a traditional elite has been able to withstand the challenge of Modernisation through two centuries. The study is both qualitative and quantitative. The data on nobility is very reliable, because it is mainly based on official certificates that the nobles had to send to the House of Nobility.
